World’s biggest comedians storm Nigeria for Glo Laftafest

Two of America’s hottest comedians, Tony Roberts and Deeray Davis will team up with Africa’s hottest comedians including the continent’s number one rib-tickler, Ndumiso Lindi of South Africa, Uganda’s Salvado and A-list Nigerian comedians to give Nigerians a comic treat of a lifetime at the Glo mega Laftafest shows scheduled for Lagos and Abuja in October.

Aptly tagged Invasion LOL, this season’s Glo Laftafest has been rated as Nigeria’s greatest comedy shows of the year.

Other top-rated comedians slated to perform at the shows to be hosted by Basketmouth include Ali Baba, Bovi, Okey Bakassi, Akparoro, I Go Dye, Klint de Drunk, Buchi, Gordons, Funny Bone, Bash, Emeka Smith, Julius Agwu, Sim Card. Continue...

The comedy sessions will be spiced with the best of Nigerian music with first class acts like Psquare, Lagbaja, Flavour, Wande Coal, MI, Omawunmi, Burna Boy, Naeto C, Waje, Lynzz and Chee lined up to entertain guests at different intervals during the shows.

The tour will start with the two mega shows in Lagos and Abuja at the Eko Hotel Convention Centre on October 19 and the Thisday Dome on October 25. Other shows will be held at the Rochas Convention Centre, Owerri on November 3, Aztech Arcum Centre, Port Harcourt on November 10, Best Western Hotel, Benin City on November 17, Golden Royale Hotel, Enugu on November 24 and Nkweagu Ugbala Convention Centre, Abakaliki on December 1. Uyo, Asaba and Ibadan will host the shows respectively on December 8 at Amazing Grace Centre, on December 15 atOrchid Hotel Hall and on December 22 at Caso Lucio.

In a statement, Globacom said it scaled up this year’s Laftafest in order to spice the company’s 10th anniversary celebrations.

According to Globacom, the shows are aimed at the company’s loyal subscribers who only need to recharge their phones with N1, 000 and text LOL Lagos or any other host city to a short code 33001.

Supremely talented and award winning Tony Roberts first stepped onto the stage at Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle in Royal Oak, Michigan, USA. After Performing on BET's comic view, an impressed fan gave him a gold chain with a microphone on it.

He has appeared on HBO's Def Comedy Jam, BET's ComicView, and It's Showtime at the Apollo. In February 2006, Roberts was picked to participate in the HBOUS Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen.

Roberts has performed his stand-up all over the world and was the recipient of the BET Robin Harris Award for Most Original Comic.

On his part, DeRay, also of the United States of America, won the Comedy Central Laugh Riots Competition and was the biggest hit on the Cedric the Entertainer Tour. Best known for his role as Ray-Ray the Hustle Guy in Barbershop and Barbershop 2: Back in Business, Davis has also appeared in other films, including Semi-Pro and 21 Jump Street. Davis' television roles and appearances have included programs such as Reno 911,BET's ComicView, MTV's Nick Cannon's Wild 'N Out and 'Short Circuitz, and HBO's Entourage.

Ndumiso Lindi came into limelight in South Africa when he won the amateur category in the Red Bull Comedy All Stars Comedy Challenge. He has toured South Africa performing at the Barnyard Theatre Festival in Durban, Pretoria and Johannesburg and has shared the stage with local comedy stalwarts like Kurt Schoonraad, Mel Miller, Riaad Moosa, Dave Levinsohn, Cokey Falkow and David Kau. This rock-solid stand up act has come a long way in a short time, recently being chosen for the prestigious 46664 series of comedy shows, touring the arenas of South Africa, as well as several African countries, including Nigeria and Ghana.

Canadian pop star, Justin Bieber, received knocks on the social media on Wednesday, for being lifted by his bodyguards up the Great Wall of China.

Two bodyguards lifted Bieber on their shoulders, not allowing his feet touch the ground of the historical site on the way up. Although Bieber later posed for pictures on his feet on one of the wall’s summits, still some people did not take kindly to his decision to get carried along the brick-paved walkway along the top of the wall.

The behaviour was described as arrogant by some media. Many could not see the reason why the 19-year-old singer could not use his own legs to walk on one of the seven wonders of the world.

Bieber has also been criticised lately for going without shirt to clubs, which some people have termed as childish and immature.

One Twitter user, who was not impressed with Bieber’s antics, chided “All hail Emperor Bieber.”

Another tweet said, “Bieber made his bodyguards carry him up the Great Wall- what an idiot.”

But the singer is not new to controversies.

In recent months, Bieber has been cleared by cops for hit-and-run incidents, accused of speeding and spitting at fans from his hotel balcony.

In April 2013, Swedish cops reportedly found drugs and a stun-gun on board bieber’s tour bus.

In July 2013, a video of Bieber peeing in a mop bucket at a nightclub was posted online. Instead of using the nightclub toilets, Bieber and his friends decided to pee in the kitchen.

“Quick piss break, this is the quickest place for a bathroom break,” someone said in the video.

“We swagger man, that’s the coolest spot to piss. You’ll remember that forever,” one of his friends added.

Three months later, a DJ, Addison Ulhaq, filed a report against Bieber, claiming the singer spat at him in a nightclub. Ulhaq was performing at the Social Room in Columbus, Ohio, when the pop star’s minders were said to have approached him, demanding he should not take pictures of Bieber.

Breaking News: Private Plane Crashes in Mafoluku, Oshodi-Isolo, Lagos | Late Olusegun Agagu’s Body reportedly on Board

A few minutes ago, a private plane allegedly owned by Associated Airlines crashed at Aviation Estate, Mafoluku, Oshodi-Isolo way, Lagos.

According to reports, 20 people are feared dead. The body of the former Governor of Ondo State Olusegun Agagu who died in September after slumping in Lagos, was also allegedly on board. He is to buried tomorrow Friday 4th October 2013.

The scene is surrounded by officials and men from fire stations.

ASUU: FG may involve Shagari, Obasanjo in negotiation

There are indications that the Federal Government may seek the intervention of past Presidents/Heads of States, Governors, traditional rulers and serving Senators to mediate in its current face-off with the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

The supervisory Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, said this on Wednesday in Abuja during a palliative meeting with the President of Nigeria Union of Teachers, Michael Olukoya; and Minister of Labour and Productivity, Emeka Wogu.

Olukoya had suggested that following the inability of the committees earlier set up to settle the crisis, the Federal Government should seek the intervention of past presidents, governors, traditional rulers and serving senators.

He also said that the NUT still stood by its threat to solidarise with ASUU over the university teachers’ demands unless directed otherwise by the union’s National Executive Council.

Olukoya said, “With the way this strike has lingered on for three months, we believe government should explore all modalities to end it. Government should invite past heads of states, speakers, senators, Ministers of Labour and Education and every other stakeholder in the sector to resolve this ugly situation.

“Call powerful voices like traditional leaders to intervene in this strike because our concern as teachers is that as these undergraduates stay at home, they are prone to negative vices and in turn these are the same people that would lead the society in future.”

Wike said government was looking at the suggestion by NUT.

He said, “We have met to dialogue on the way forward to the crisis in the education sector. The meeting went very well and it was very cordial with respect to the crisis between ASUU and Federal Government.

The suggestions by NUT were quite good and the ones we suggested were also quite good and we have put them together. Just watch out what is going to happen very soon.”

The Minister was however evasive on when the strike would be called off.

Meanwhile, Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities will meet in Akure, Ondo State on Monday, October 6, to deliberate on the ASUU strike.

This came as students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife on Wednesday, urged the Federal Government to implement immediately the various agreements it reached with labour unions in the nation’s tertiary institutions.

Ripples over Jim Iyke deliverance video

Some of the respondents are movie fans resident outside the country. Lampooning the actor on his Twitter account, a popular Ghanaian radio presenter, Kwame Bee’, inferred that it was all a ploy by Iyke to win the heart of Ghanaian actress, Nadia Buari, who was rumoured to be his love interest.

Tweeting in Pidgin English, he wrote, “As Nadia chop Jim Iyke im money finish, way he nod dey get payroll for Naija movie. Na im he start dey act for Emmanuel TV,…oh Nana Eyema help us. Sic.”

Also, controversial Nigerian adult film actress, Afrocandy, who is based in the US, joined the debate on Twitter. She said, “Na waah for our actors, Jim Iyke took his stunt to the altar. I wonder how much he got paid for this ‘movie.’ Nevertheless, he is a very good actor.”

But some of Iyke’s colleagues, including the outspoken filmmaker, Charles Novia and former president of the Actor’s Guild of Nigeria, Segun Arinze, are not eager to treat the matter lightly.

In a purported Blackberry broadcast message, Arinze expressed doubt about the origin of the video. He was quoted as saying, “This Jim Iyke’s deliverance video at the Synagogue trending looks too contrived. It’s a big embarrassment. Has anyone ever seen demons come out live and speak? Una fit stand demons? Una carry Nollywood enter Church, abi? How much did he get paid? I’m just wondering. Make una stop all these nonsense play. Haba, this is stranger than fiction!”

In a series of tweets, Novia said, “So, Jim Iyke got ‘delivered’ of an evil demon in a popular church recently? Chai! Strange things happen. And after Jim Iyke’s deliverance, the ‘new’ Jim Iyke barked out at his PA about his shoes coming off his legs? All I can say is that ‘whatever floats your boat, brother’. Better send those poor women you have dated to the same church for the same.”

Surprisingly, Iyke, appears to have chosen to remain silent amid increasing public criticism. Occasionally he lets some tweets that have further heightened the suspense.

One of his messages read, “Lol, witchcraft?! It is imperative that I underscore the fact that some people are oblivious of what transpired [during my deliverance]. Ignorance is no excuse. Tailor your opinion to who you know.”

Another tweet read, “Met more miserable billionaires than unhappy income earners. Success is relative. I want it wholesome. It is either your bond or free. #Urchoice. It’s beautiful that is the least I can say. Nothing else truly matters. Absolutely nothing! God lives, whether you are a believer or not. #bless.

Police arrest three teenage stowaways at Lagos airport

The only disadvantage of celebrating and giving scholarship to Daniel Oikhena is this - copy cats. Apparently impressed by the national recognition Daniel got for beating airport security and successfully flying in the tyre hole of a Lagos-bound Arik plane from Benin, three teenage boys have attempted to do the same. Lateef Popolla, 13 (from Ogun State) Amadi Joshua, 14 (from Ebonyi state) and Ukpabio Onyedikachi, 14 (from Abia State) were arrested at different times at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja by the Airport Command of the Nigeria Police Force for allegedly attempting to illegally board some international flights in Lagos, Punch reports.

The commissioner of police at the airport command said the boys were found at different times at the airport with the aim of getting into any plane and travel out of Nigeria. The boys deny they were attempting to board any plane...

The teenagers gave different reasons for their actions. Lateef who is a Primary 3 dropout who resides with his grandmother said he went to the tarmac to see the planes and thereafter decide on where he would travel to. he was arrested after he came out from one of the airport apron buses. he said " I actually wanted to travel but I have not yet decided where I will go. So, I just went to the tarmac to see the aeroplanes.”

Lateef’s grandmother, Adunni, said she had no idea that her grandson was nursing the idea of travelling out of the country. She said she had been responsible for his upkeep since his mother abandoned him at infancy. I did not know that he wanted to travel. I just did not see him last week and I started looking for him all over the place. It was on Saturday that I finally found out that he had been arrested,” she said.

Onyedikachi and Joshua were said to have been arrested after asking some security agents where Malaysia flights were boarding. Onyedikachi who has a brother that resides in malaysia nursed the intention of travelling to see him. After being questioned, the boys, who were both in SS1, said they had no travel documents and were immediately arrested.

Onyedikachi, however said, “We were at the departure area of the airport. We did not attempt to travel out. We were just loitering and wanted to see the aeroplanes. We did not want to travel out on that day.”Onyedikachi’s mother berated her son for his escapade. She said she had warned him and Joshua to be well behaved at all times. She said, “I had no knowledge of what they did. Onyedikachi is well taken care of and is not suffering. I don’t realy  know what pushed him to do this.”

Electricity workers protest as investors get share certificates and some are not paid

The privatisation of the Nigerian power industry took a step closer to completion on Monday with the handing over of share certificates to 13 investors who had earlier paid for the 14 electricity generation and distribution companies.

President Goodluck Jonathan, who distributed the share certificates to the core investors, said the Federal Government had capitalised the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company to the tune of over $750m so as to ensure the successful operation of the companies by the private sector operators.

However, the handover of the certificates to the investors was protested nationwide by the workers of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, who insisted that the government had not fully addressed all labour issues.
