Photo: Woman caught with dead day old baby in sack in Lagos

A 40-year old widow named Mujidat was caught yesterday Wednesday October 30th with a dead day old baby she hid inside a sack around her residence at at the Iba area of Lagos, PM News reports.

It was gathered that a member of the community, High Chief Babatunde Balogun caught the mother of seven when she was trying to dispose the baby at about 5 p.m. on Wednesday. When questioned on the content of the sack, she claimed she was coming from the market where she bought some household items.

However, on a closer look, Balogun discovered that the sack contained a dead day old baby the woman allegedly had just delivered. He then called the attention of the other residents. Neighbours told P.M News that after Mujidat’s husband known as Baba Mushin died about three years ago, they have seen men visiting her residence, the house built by her late husband.

When asked if she planned to throw away the baby because of an alleged paternity mess, she denied, claiming that a welder turned block maker near her residence was responsible for the pregnancy that resulted in the birth of the dead baby she was caught with.

She claimed she took delivery of the baby by herself because she found it easy and therefore did not go to any hospital or sought anybody’s help.

At about 9 p.m yesterday when P.M.NEWS visited the area, residents of the area were still milling around the residence of the woman.

Officials of the Community Development Association, CDA, in the area later accompanied the woman and her sack of baby to the Isheri-Oshun Police Division where the matter was reported. At the time of this report, the woman was still being interrogated.

NPF says this pic of an ACP fondling a lady's boobs is photoshopped

The photo above went viral last week. It shows a senior police officer believed to be an Assistant Commissioner of Police fondling the boobs of a light skinned lady. The Nigerian Police Force released a statement via their Facebook page a few days ago claiming the pic is a fake Photoshopped by adobe photoshop. It doesn't look Photoshopped to me. Looks like the lady took the photo herself...

Pic of the day: Google earth view of an unfortunately designed church

From street-level, there doesn't seem to be anything comical about the design of the Christian Science Society of Dixon in Illinois (Lol at Dixon) but when viewed from the heavens (space), the sanctuary looks like an erect 'you know what'. Hehe. Eagle-eyed redditors using Google Earth spotted the likeness recently...

They may be a nation wide black out come NOV 1 "Power firms: FG insists on Nov 1 handover"

The much anticipated conclusion of the privatisation of the power sector is enveloped in uncertainty following conflicting signals emanating from key stakeholders on the scheduled handover of the successor companies of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria tomorrow (Friday).

While the Federal Government is insisting that there is no going back on the handover date, the PHCN workers are gearing up for a nationwide strike to prevent the handover, claiming that their terminal entitlements have not been fully paid.

The consortia that won the bids for the successor power firms, on the other hand, are anxiously waiting to receive the nod from the government to take over the firms so that they can begin the implementation of their turnaround plans.

To underline its seriousness about the November 1 handover of the firms to the new investors, the Federal Government has deployed ministers and key officials to the various locations of the successor companies to handle the transfer of ownership on its behalf.

It insisted that 40,093 out of the 47,913 identified workers of the PHCN had been fully paid their entitlements, which were put at N294.4bn, while N214.2bn was paid as severance package, with the workers’ pension gulping N80.2bn.

The National Union of Electricity Employees is, however, disputing the payment of the pension contributions, and has vowed to call the workers out on an indefinite strike.

The Federal Government, through the Bureau of Public Enterprises, on Wednesday released the schedule for the handover, with key government officials mandated to represent Vice-President Namadi Sambo, who is also the Chairman, National Council on Privatisation at the various locations.

According to a statement by the BPE, the Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, will hand over the Abuja Distribution Company to KANN Utility Consortium in Abuja; the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, will hand over the Ibadan Distribution Company to Integrated Energy Distribution & Marketing Limited; while the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Deziani Alison-Madueke, will give out the Enugu Distribution Company to Interstate Electrics Limited.

The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Olusegun Aganga, will give out the Eko Distribution Company to West Power & Gas; the Minister of Transport, Idris Umar, is expected to hand over the Kainji Electricity Distribution Company to Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited; while the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Adoke, will handle the transfer of the Yola distribution Company to Integrated Energy Distribution and Marketing Limited.

Similarly, the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Mr. Musa Sada, will oversee the handing over of the Kano Distribution Company to Sahelian Power SPV Limited; the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, will transfer the Jos Distribution Company to Aura Energy Limited; the Minister of Labour, Chief Emeka Wogu, will hand over the Ughelli Generation Company to Transcorp Ughelli Power Plc; while the Minister of State for Works, Ambassador Bashir Yuguda, will preside over the handing over of the Shiroro Generation Company to North-South Power Company.

The Director-General, BPE, Mr. Benjamin Dikki, is expected to hand over the Ikeja Distribution Company and Egbin Power Plant to NEDC/KEPCO Consortium; the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Dr. Godswill Igali, will handle the transfer of the Port Harcourt Distribution Company to 4Power Consortium; the Chairman, Presidential Task Force on Power, Mr. Beks Dagogo-Jack, will hand over the Benin Distribution Company to Vigeo Power Consortium; while the Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mr. Andrew Yakubu, will preside over the transfer of the Geregu Generation Company to Amperion Power Distribution.

Dikki said, “This handover is a culmination of 14 years of painstaking effort by the National Council on Privatisation, Bureau of Public Enterprises and other key stakeholders to reform and liberalise Nigeria’s electricity industry, which began in 1999.”

Igali also said this while briefing State House correspondents on the outcome of a meeting between the stakeholders in the power privatisation process and Sambo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja that the government was sure of a successful handing over since it had made a significant progress in settling the disengaged workers.

Igali explained that while the severance packages went directly into the bank accounts of beneficiaries, the gratuity was paid to their pension fund custodians.

He added that the documents of additional 605 workers, who were validated on Tuesday, had been sent for payment.

The permanent secretary, however, said the government currently had issues with some workers, whose biometric data were corrupted.

He said those under this category, 1,478 workers from the Enugu Distribution Company and 929 others nationwide would be invited to Abuja for recapturing.

Igali said the government also had issues with another 1,000 workers who had been cleared but had cases of duplication of names and account numbers, while describing as bad cases those of 2,500 whom he said had no record that they were PHCN workers probably because they were casual workers.

However, the NUEE directed the workers to withdraw their services if the government eventually went ahead with the handover of the PHCN subsidiary companies to private investors on Friday.

The Secretary General, NUEE, Mr. Joe Ajaero, in a statement on Wednesday, said outstanding labour issues had yet to be resolved by the Federal Government; adding that the plan to hand over the power assets negated the agreement it reached with the union.

“By this statement, we urge all workers of PHCN to withdraw their services from any unit in the event of further provocation by armed military personnel desperate to take over PHCN installations. This is to avoid confrontations with the troops from November 1, 2013,” he said.

Ajaero noted that the gratuity payment was only 68 per cent completed, adding that no member of staff has had their pension contributions transferred into their Retirement Savings Accounts.

He said, “Those that retired from service since 2011 have not received their benefits totalling about N19bn. The differences of the shortfall of the terminal benefits from June 30, 2012 till date have not been considered for payment.

“The biometrically captured and considered casuals’ appointment has not been addressed. The question of 10 per cent equity shareholding (in the companies) by the workers as statutorily provided has not been given attention.

“While we appreciate and sympathise with the core investors, we ask for their understanding and that of the Nigerian public in our pursuit to ensure a seamless transition. We are resolute on receiving every kobo owed us as we are sure such liabilities will not be borne by the new investors unless there is a commitment to that effect from them.”

The President-General, Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies, Mr. Bede Opara, stated that although all government agencies concerned in the process had made tremendous efforts at settling the workers, what was remaining was the payment of the employees’ pensions.

He stated that the workers would not have been interested in embarking on a strike, but maintained that the handover of the firms would not be fair if all issues were not amicably resolved.

Forbes names Dangote Africa’s most powerful man

The President, Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has been named the most powerful man in Africa and 64th in the world by the Forbes magazine.

Dangote, who Forbes says is by far Africa’s richest man with a net worth of $16.1bn as of March 2013, was ranked ahead of the likes of Fifa President, Sepp Blatter (69); Speaker, United States House of Representatives, John Boehner (66); and Founder, Mo Ibrahim Foundation, Mohammed Ibrahim (71).

The 56-year-old, Dangote, whose company is considered one of the most diversified on the list, is currently ranked 43 on the Forbes list of the world’s billionaires with his net worth over time said to be on the rise.

In August, the industrialist had announced plans by the Dangote Group to build a $9bn refinery and petrochemical complex in Nigeria, a move which is expected to help the group further diversify its current business model and increase his net worth.

Away from his business interests, mention was also made of his philanthropic efforts in his profile on the Forbes website.

It reads in part, “Inspired by fellow billionaires, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, Dangote is making a name for himself on the philanthropic circuit and has given away millions to education, health and social causes in Africa.”

Apart from Dangote, Ibrahim is the only other African on the list, which contains 72 people.

Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin, topped the list, displacing United States President, Barrack Obama, who dropped to the second spot for the first time in three years.

Chinese President, Xi Jinping, occupies the third spot, while the head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, debuts on the list at number four.

Pope Francis, who was elected in March this year, leads 12 other new entrants.

Other notable new names on the list are Samsung Chairman, Lee Kun-Hee (41); Volkswagen’s Martin Winterkorn (49); South Korean President, Park Geun-hye (52); and Janet Yellen (72), who has been nominated by President Obama as the next leader of the US Federal Reserves.

The Executive Editor of the New York Times, Jill Abramson (68), makes a return appearance after dropping off the list in years past.

Facebook Founder, Mark Zuckerberg, aged 29, and North Korean leader, Kim Jung-un, aged 30, are the youngest people on the list. Zuckerberg occupies the 24th place, while Kim is ranked 46th.

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah, who occupies the eight spot, is the oldest person on the list. He is 89 years old.

The world’s richest man, Carlos Slim, is, however, not the most powerful man. The América Móvil honorary chairman occupies the 12th position.

According to Forbes, the Most Powerful People in the World list is an annual snapshot of the heads of state, financiers, philanthropists and entrepreneurs, who truly rule the world.

“It represents the collective wisdom of top Forbes editors, who consider hundreds of nominees before ranking the planet’s top 72 power-brokers – one for every 100 million people on earth – based on their scope of influence and their financial resources relative to their peers,” the magazine explained.

This year’s list features 17 heads of state, who run nations with a combined Gross Domestic Product of some $48tn.

Severed head of Brazilian footballer discovered in a bag on his front doorstep

Police in Brazil have launched a manhunt after the severed head of a former professional footballer was left on the doorstep of his home. The horrified wife of Joao Rodrigo Silva Santos, 35, made the gruesome discovery as she left the house in Rio de Janeiro for work early yesterday morning.

The player's eyes and tongue had been cut out and his head placed inside one of his own rucksacks, police said. Mr Santos retired from football two years ago after a successful career playing for several teams in Rio de Janeiro, as well as for clubs in Sweden and Honduras.

He had recently set up his own business selling health foods and dietary supplements. Continue...

Police said today that Mr Santos is believed to have been snatched from outside the shop he had opened in the Realengo district of Rio as he closed up at around 7.45pm on Monday.

Witnesses said they saw several men bundling him into his car, a Hyundai i30, and speeding off just before midnight, a spokesman said. He was reported missing by his wife at 9pm on Monday.

Mr Santos' brother-in-law, who didn't want to be named, told Brazil's Globo G1 website that the player's wife, Geisa Silva, 31, stayed up all night after her husband failed to arrive home. He said: 'Every time a car passed by she would go to see. 'She was getting ready to go to work at around 5.30am when she heard a noise, opened the front door and saw his rucksack.

'When she opened it she discovered it contained his head. 'I did not want to look but the people who saw it said they had gouged out his eyes and cut off his tongue,' said the horrified relative. Neighbours living close to the crime scene reported hearing a woman screaming: 'My God, it's Joao! It’s Joao’s head.' From what I know, he didn't have any enemies and neither did his wife,' the relative added. In a statement Mr Santos' widow said the couple had not been subjected to any threats.

Lead murder investigator Rafael Rangel from the 14th Military Police Battalion (BPM) in Rio, said witnesses saw armed men kidnap the businessman. 'We believe that the people who took him knew the family’s routine,' said Rangel.

Investigators are working on the hypothesis that Mr Santos could have been murdered by a drugs gang because of Mrs Silva's work at a military police base in a local slum. The Police Pacification Unit in the Morro do Sao Carlos is one of dozens set up in Rio's favelas to retake control of the city's slums from violent drug traffickers.

However, according to police chief Rafael Rangel, Mrs Silva worked as a social worker in the base and didn't patrol the streets or make arrests like other police officers. He told Brazil's O Dia newspaper the motives of the murder are still unclear. He said: 'Mrs Silva has no idea who would have done this. Neither she, her husband or any other member of the family have suffered any type of threat as far as she knows. 'There is nothing that would justify such a barbarous crime.' Santos did not have a police record.

Later today Brazilian police said body parts dumped beside a city river were believed to be those of Mr Santos. The player's brother-in-law told Brazil's Globo G1 website that family members had positively identified a torso found next to the Guandu river in Queimados, greater Rio de Janeiro, by a birth mark on Mr Santos' stomach. A police spokesman said other body parts had also been found in the area and were being DNA tested.

He said the murder bears the hallmarks of an execution by drug gangsters, but stressed that "every line of investigation" is still open.

The couple had been together for 11 years and were described as ‘lovely’ by neighbours. 'They were a happy, quiet couple,' said a neighbour, who asked not to be identified. 'But you never know what may have motivated a crime as stupid and as senseless as this.' Mr Santos’ played as a professional footballer between 1996 and 2005 - during which he scored 33 goals in 103 matches as a striker. Nicknamed Humble Hero, he was signed to a number of second division teams. He also played abroad for Swedish Club Oster Vaxjo and Olimpia in Honduras. A recent United Nations report into drug trafficking-related crime in Brazil found that more than half of the homicides, robberies and thefts have a direct or indirect link with this criminal activity. US Senator Ted Cruz apologizes for offensive remark about Nigerians

On Monday Oct. 21st, US Republican Senator Ted Cruz told a rally that Nigerian email scammers have been hired to run the Obamacare website, a comment that a lot of Nigerians found offensive. After being bombarded with several phone calls from Nigerians in Houston and all across the US, the office of Ted Cruz has issued a statement from the Senator apologizing for what he said.

The full statement reads:

It’s unfortunate that we’re living in a time where just about every joke can be misconstrued to cause offense to someone.

To the good people of Nigeria - a beautiful nation where my wife lived briefly as the child of missionaries - no offense was intended.

I am fully appreciative of the range of mutual economic and security interests that make Nigeria an important friend to the United States.

And even to those few unscrupulous email scammers who were the subject of the joke, I apologize to you for the unfair comparison to the utterly dysfunctional Obamacare website.

Sign of end time? Mysterious figures at Chelsea stadium :-)

A bit of news from the world of football...:-). 11 strange men in black robes (can you spot them in the pic below?) caused a stir at Chelsea's Stamford Bridge yesterday Sunday October 27th during the Chelsea vs Manchester City clash.

Goal.com reports that the hooded men, who had mysterious circles on their chest, were seen making curious synchronised movements at irregular intervals during Chelsea's 2-1 win, while they also stood in unison at random moments.

Situated three rows back from the corner flag at the Shed End, the gang could be clearly seen on TV cameras beaming pictures of the crunch fixture all across the world.

One Chelsea fan sat close to the mysterious guests was Robin Taylor, who said afterwards that he was slightly perturbed by their presence.

"We're used to a few different characters down at Chelsea, there was once even a guy brushing his teeth behind the bench at a game, but we've had nothing quite like this before," he said.

Dear TBB readers: Can a girl marry her late elder sister's fiance?

DEAR TBB READERS

Can you marry your late elder sister's fiancé three years after her death? The late young lady was actually preparing for the wedding before she died in the car crash. Three years later, her younger sister marries her fiancé. and it got me asking myself plenty questions: 1) Is it too early? I mean, it's been three years. 2) Has he totally forgotten the deceased girl? 3) what if he hasn't, will the new bride bear to see him still thinking about her sister or mourning her on the anniversaries of her death and on her birthdays? 4) I wonder if the deceased girl is happy or sad about the situation? (You posted the story of the deceased girl when she died but please, keep it out to protect the innocent). I just feel it's unusual and I've been feeling uncomfortable about it. On the day of girl's burial, the young man actually promised never to leave their family. Little did they no, know this was what he meant. Sigh.

Chris Brown arrested for felony assault

Chris Brown has got to take it easy before they lock him up for good. He was arrested this morning for felony assault after attacking a man outside a Washington DC hotel ...

From TMZ

Chris Brown was arrested in Washington D.C. this morning for felony assault after allegedly attacking a man outside a hotel ... TMZ has learned.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... at around 4:30 AM Brown got into an argument with a man outside the W Hotel on K Street and allegedly punched him once in the face. We're told the alleged victim never threw a punch.

The alleged victim tells TMZ ... he and a friend were hanging out at the W when they saw two woman about to take a picture with Brown. The victim -- who says he's not a Chris Brown fan -- says he and his buddy photo bombed the 2 woman and Chris went nuts, punching him in the face and breaking his nose. He went to the hospital and says he may need surgery as early as tomorrow.

There's a different version of what happened. Find that after the cut...

Law enforcement sources and the alleged victim tell TMZ ... before striking the man, Chris said, "I'm not into this gay s**t, I'm into boxing." After Chris punched the man, the fight was taken to the ground.

Sources connected with Chris tell TMZ ... the alleged victim is full of BS. He was NOT trying to take a pic with Chris ... he was trying to get on Chris' tour bus, and Brown was simply trying to stop a trespass. The sources say before the incident the 2 girls tried to get on the bus but they were stopped, and that's when the victim and his friend made their move.

Law enforcement sources say Chris did not appear to be under the influence of anything.

Chris and his bodyguard -- who was also arrested -- will stay in jail today. Under DC law Brown can't get bail so he'll appear before a magistrate Monday, and until then he'll stay behind bars.

The alleged victim tells TMZ he doesn't understand why Brown was "so homophobic" to hurl such a slur. And get this ... the victim says he would have accepted an apology at the scene, but now he will absolutely press charges --and he's already hired a lawyer.

Brown is still on probation in the Rihanna beating case and this could be grounds for violating his probation -- which means he could be sentenced to prison for nearly 4 years ... worst case scenario for him.

White Nigerian Marries Heart-Throb in Low-Key Wedding

Singer and comedian Mohammed Jamma, aka White Nigerian, in the course of the week, uploaded pictures of his marriage to his long-time sweetheart on his Twitter and Facebook pages.

The singer proposed to his girlfriend of three years, Maricel Romero, a Colombian, on the AY Live Abuja show, after he had performed on stage.

The artiste had earlier insisted that his wedding would be low-key, because it would be difficult to send out invites to everyone.

The photo which showed the couple curdling put to rest rumours that the singer was unmarried and the relationship he was having with the Colombian beauty.

"I am happy that I got married and also had my NYSC certificates. It feels very good to leave bachelor hood. I think October has been my month. Getting married to the most beautiful and industrious lady is what any man could wish for. It was a private wedding," he posted on his Facebook page.

A 13-year-old boy carrying a replica assault rifle has been shot dead by police in the US state of California, the BBC reports.

Officers in the city of Santa Rosa say they opened fire after the boy refused orders to drop the rifle, which they believed to be real.

The shooting on Tuesday is now being investigated.

It comes a day after a 12-year-old boy in Nevada shot dead a maths teacher at his school and wounded two fellow pupils before taking his own life.

In the latest incident, two sheriff’s deputies saw the teenager “with what appeared to be some type of rifle”, a news release from the Sonoma County Sheriff’s office said.

The deputies called for backup and repeatedly ordered the boy to drop the gun before firing several rounds from their handguns, police said.

The boy, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was later identified by his family as Andy Lopez.

“He was holding the weapon in his left hand. He began to turn toward his right in the direction of the deputy, and in so doing he moved the gun toward the deputy, and the deputy’s mindset was that he was fearful he would be shot,” Lt Paul Henry of Santa Rosa police said.

But the boy’s father, Rodrigo Lopez said the shooting made no sense. “My son lost his life. He’s not alive any more just because of the mistake of somebody.”

The replica gun had belonged to a friend, he said.

The sheriff’s office said a plastic handgun had also been found in the boy’s waistband.

Witness Brian Zastrow told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat he heard seven shots.

“First, I heard a single siren and within seconds I heard seven shots go off, sounded like a nail gun,” he said.

One man who saw the events unfold said the shooting was over in an instant.

“He pulled over to the kid walking and he just opened the door and shot him, three shots,” Ismael Mondragon told KGO-TV.

Police Lt Dennis O’Leary said the deputies had been placed on administrative leave pending the inquiry.

Sheriff Steve Freitas described the shooting as a “tragedy” and promised the investigation would be thorough and transparent.

“As a father of two boys about this age, I can’t begin to imagine the grief this family is going through,” he said.

A spokeswoman for the boy’s school described him as “a very loved student, a very popular, very handsome young man, very smart and capable”.

Linsey Gannon, assistant principal at Lawrence Cook Middle School, said he played trumpet in the school band.

“Our community has been rocked by his loss,” she said.

Candles, teddy bears and flowers have since been left at the scene of the shooting.

“He was a good kid, he was 13 years old. He didn’t look like a man, Andy, he was a boy,” one friend told local media.

On Monday, a 12-year-old boy who has not been named opened fire at a school in Sparks, Nevada, killing maths teacher and Afghanistan veteran Michael Landsberry.

Police said Mr Landsberry had tried to coax the boy to drop the gun, enabling children in the playground to flee.

The boy then shot and injured two fellow pupils, before taking his own life on the outdoor basketball court.

President Barack Obama has recently renewed calls for changes to US gun laws following a series of deadly shootings. However, the BBC’s Alastair Leithead in Los Angeles says the proposals face fierce resistance.

US Sen. says Nigerian email scammers have been hired to run the Obamacare website

On Monday night, October 21st, US Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz insulted Nigerians in a bid to mock Obamacare website glitch. He told a rally of his fellow activists in Houston that Nigerian email scammers have been hired to run the Obamacare website.

Senator Cruz said:

“You may have noticed that all the Nigerian email scammers have become a lot less active lately. They all have been hired to run the Obamacare website.”

How can a senator talk so recklessly? And he even laughed. We don suffer.

According to the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati, President Goodluck Jonathan has set up a three-man panel to investigate the N225million armoured car scandal involving aviation minister, Stella Oduah.

Mr Abati said the panel will be chaired by the immediate past Head of Service, Sali Bello and will include the National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki, and Air Vice Marshal Dik Iruenebere. The panel is to find out why the cars were bought and whether the procurement of the cars followed due process or not. Stella Oduah was conspicuously absent at today's Federal Executive Council meeting.

Ex-reps member Dino Melaye arrested for protesting against Oduah

Former House of Reps member and Executive Director, Anti-Corruption Network, Dino Melaye was this afternoon arrested by the Nigerian police during a protest at the Federal Secretariat in Abuja.

Dino led a group of protesters to the Federal Secretariat, Abuja around noon today, calling for the sack of the Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah, over the purchase of two BMW armoured cars.

Drama ensued during the protest as another group emerged from nowhere to stage a counter protest to drum up support for the minister.

The police led by an Assistant Commissioner of Police in the FCT, Sunday Olukoya, arrived at the scene and promptly arrested Dino Melaye's group. They were taken away in a Toyota Hilux van, marked NPS 21280 at about one this afternoon.

Atiku, 215 others sign petition to end ASUU strike

Two hundred and sixteen Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora have signed an online petition asking the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities to end the industrial dispute which has kept public universities shut for four months.

The petition launched on change.org, a go-to site for web protests, is asking President Goodluck Jonathan and the National President of ASUU, Dr. Nassir Faggae, to reach an “amicable consensus.”

In the petition entitled, “Mr. President and the Academic Staff Union of Universities: Please End the ASUU Strike now,” the petitioners said the Presidency should stop playing politics with education of the Nigerian youth.

The petition read in part, “Since the ASUU strike began, it has been over half a semester, a lot in the life of students waiting at home, not knowing when the strike will be over. The future of Nigeria is at stake. Stop playing politics with education.

“It is urgent we send a message that it is long past time for the FG and ASUU to reach consensus and get students back to school by ending this strike.”

A majority of non-students who appended their signature to the petition noted that they joined the online protest with a view to crying out to ASUU and the FG to consider poor students whose parents cannot afford the luxury of sending them overseas to study like the sons and daughters of political office holders.

Former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, joined other students and concerned Nigerians clamouring for a speedy end to the crisis rocking the higher education sector.

Atiku, who featured the link to the petition signing website on his Twitter handle, wrote, “We should never play politics with education. Our future depends on it. It is time for the FG and ASUU to reach a consensus and get students back to school by ending this strike.”

An Abuja-based post-graduate student in one of the public universities in the country, Mubarak Jubrin, expressing his dissatisfaction, wrote: “I am stuck with a semester to finish my Master’s programme. The FG should be doing everything possible to rescue the one institution left that is working towards producing better human beings who will shape the future of our dear country.”

Noting that prolonged shutting down of public universities is a dangerous omen for the society and development of the nation, a Kaduna-based student, Tarik Abubakar, also said Nigerians students were being denied their rights to education.

“Students in other countries are enjoying their rights to education. I am pleading with the FG and ASUU to settle their issue and call off the strike,” Abubakar stated.

A Nigerian student studying at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, Godspower Onwudiwe, lamented that the industrial action paints a bad picture of Nigeria on the international scene.

Onwudiwe stated, I feel so sorry for my beloved country because these incessant strikes are a barrier to her general development. Also, as a student in the Diaspora, it paints a very pitiful and shameful picture on our international identity.

“I cannot wait to not only see this strike end but also the end of future strikes to the detriment of the future of this generation and our country at large.”

Jemima Gana, who was moved to sign the petition because she believes that the status quo needs to change as the prosperous future of Nigeria depends on quality education, which is being threatened by the strike.

Gana, who according to the information she provided on the site, is based in Lagos, said Nigerian students need a stable learning environment devoid of strikes for them to be able to compete globally.

“It is so important to me because it is high time the FG took the value of education seriously and in high regard. Students in Nigeria need a stable environment to acquire knowledge and graduate on time in order to contribute their skills to the growth and development of this great nation,” she wrote.

Broken promises ended Oprah's friendship with the Obamas?

Ever wondered why Oprah campaigned for Barrack Obama in 2008 but not in 2012? Insiders claim Barack and Michelle broke promises to Oprah Winfrey leading to a bitter rift between them...

From The NY Post

"Everyone remembers that Oprah went all out for Obama during the 2008 presidential election. What was not reported was that, in return, Oprah was promised unique access to the White House if Obama won. She’d get regular briefings on initiatives and a heads-up on programs to give her material for her fledgling cable network, OWN.

“Oprah intended to make her unique White House access a part of her new network,” a source close to Oprah told me. “There were big plans, and a team was put together to come up with proposals that would have been mutually beneficial. “But none of that ever happened. Oprah sent notes and a rep to talk to Valerie Jarrett, but nothing came of it. It slowly dawned on Oprah that the Obamas had absolutely no intention of keeping their word and bringing her into their confidence.”

Oprah did not campaign for Obama in the 2012 race, and she has been absent from his battles on gun control, immigration reform and the environment. She claims she is too busy to get involved in politics, even though she hosted a fund-raiser for Newark Mayor Cory Booker, who won a US Senate seat last week.

Oprah’s friends publicly dismiss the idea that she had a falling out with Obama. They note that she phoned Michelle Obama right after the 2012 election to congratulate her. They say Michelle invited her to have dinner with the first family. But the dinner never took place, and Oprah continues to be frozen out.

“Oprah was hoping there would be a genuine change in the atmospherics,” one of her friends told me. “But there hasn’t been. Clearly, she is being rebuffed at the level of Michelle and Valerie. And, just as obviously, President Obama hasn’t interfered on Oprah’s behalf.” During Obama’s first term, I argued in my book “The Amateur” that Michelle was jealous of Oprah, furious that he was seeking her advice.

“For her part, Oprah doesn’t like being with Michelle, because the first lady is constantly one-upping the president and anybody else around her,” said an Oprah adviser. “Oprah has struck back by banning the Obamas from her O, The Oprah Magazine . . . It probably hurts Oprah more than Obama, who, if he had his head screwed on straight, would have flown to California and begged Oprah to help him save ObamaCare.

“But Obama hasn’t budged, and neither has Oprah. She’s hurt and angry, and I seriously doubt that Oprah will ever make up with the Obamas. She knows how to hold a grudge.”

Kanye defends bringing Jesus lookalike on stage

Kanye offended quite a number of people when he brought a Jesus lookalike on stage during the first stop of his Yeezy tour in Seattle on Saturday. Kanye now explains the method to his madness...

Kanye tells Wild 94.9 in San Fransico

"I had a friend of mine that is a pastor and we were discussing how we were going to deliver it. My girl even asked afterwards “isn’t that weird if Jesus comes on stage or something like that?” No we do plays all the time where people play Jesus. What’s awesome about Christianity is that we are allowed to portray God. We'e allowed to draw an image of Him. We’re allowed to make movies about Him. Other religions you can’t do that. Michelangelo did it…It’s a painting, it’s a sculpture, it’s a moving opera, it's a play, it’s a message. I’m not even going to do any comparisons with that. God knows where my heart is at."
